    What to watch out for when measuring curtains

    Curtain length

    In addition to exact measurements like the width of windows and doors, other dimensions also matter. For example, the length of the curtains is important – whether they should reach all the way to the floor or stop just above it. Especially in older buildings, floors and ceilings are often uneven, so you should measure windows and doors in several places. If you are combining blackout curtains with sheer curtains, the sheer curtains should be shorter than the blackout ones so they don’t peek out. Also, if the curtains reach the windowsill, be sure to consider the location of any heating elements when taking measurements.

    Hanging

    For proper hanging, it is important to measure the height from the top edge of the hanging rod, or, in the case of a curtain rail, the height from the ceiling. Do you prefer loops or rings? You should consider this when measuring curtains and drapes, as it affects the required diameter of the curtain rod.

    Curtain width

    Width is an important factor when measuring for curtains. Drapes and curtains typically end around the edges of the window. However, the entire room and windows will appear visually larger if the fabric extends about 20 cm beyond the window on both sides. When measuring, you should also consider the desired gathering or pleating of the fabric – depending on this, you’ll need to allow for double or even triple the window width in fabric.
